I'm perusing a survivalist magazine the other day, (don't ask), and I come across the following tip....

Carry some cotton balls rolled in Vaseline inside a small ziplock bag.

Apparently they're excellent firestarting aids, yet fairy safe to carry in your pack. Good idea, but I haven't personally tested it yet. Stay tuned....
